PostSubject: Quilling in icing(cake decorating)   Mon 01 Mar 2010, 5:50 pm

These are some notes I did for a demo in 2000.
You may have noticed that some of the quilling shapes such as scrolls are similar to lace shapes used in cake decorating, For my quilling in icing I used modelling paste, coloured to my requirements. Pettinice can also be used. These are available in cake decorating shops. As the paste is more elastic than paper, I found that only a short strip of icing is needed to make your quilled shape. The paste is rolled out very thinly on a board rubbed lightly with vegetable fat.
Then a parsley cutter(available in kitchen tool area) was used to cut strips. Keep strips under cover to prevent drying out.
I made my initial "B" with eye & petals shapes and put it on an iced plaque.
I found the strips needed to be cut thinner lengthways then cut into short strips 5-7 cm. Roll on a toothpick and glue with cake decorating glue(tylopur) and pinch into shape. Let shapes dry before making your design.
Just a note, I was never going to pursue quilling in icing too much as it is so fiddly. But that is true of alot of cake decorating and quilling. But with icing there is more of a mess to deal with LOL
If you Google quilling in icing you will find some samples on the internet of quite interesting examples done by people more adventurous than me.

Another cake decorating idea is to quill coils in white paper on a coloured velvet ribbon and then place the ribbon around the cake.

Do you have any photos at all to help visualize it??

Sounds hard.

Sounds complicated... I think I might have to give it a try sometime. I do have 2 more birthdays coming up.... LOL. interesting. At least if I don't try it I have something new to google!!

Thanks Bronwyn! I didn't even consider quilling with icing until you put your post on here!

Awesome.

Cheers,

Tammy, this link shows how the strips are cut.

HTH helps you visualize it.

Thanks Bronwyn, that first link is fabulous with the roses on the edges and just sets the cake off delicately, if we didn't know you would think it was paper looking at that pic

Yes Karon and would'nt it be a lovely design in paper quilling?
I am tempted to do it on a card today.
