PostSubject: Another idea for a quilled paperweight   Sun 15 Aug 2010, 12:07 am

Following on from my recent tutorial post about resin casting, I've just posted to the gallery another type of paperweight which can easily be made without resin using a simple glass coffee jar lid. If you visit this link to my blog, you can see the type of coffee jar I mean: http://quilliance.blogspot.com/2010/01/creativity-and-coffee-jars.html

To make this one, I just removed the plastic stopper from the jar lid, inserted the quilled motif and stuck it to the inside of the lid using super glue. Then I replaced the stopper to complete the paperweight and protect the quilling.

Has anybody else tried this? It's much quicker, cleaner and easier than casting quilling in resin!

Your paperweights are wonderful and makes me think I would like to try this.

I did some work a few years ago with a product called Liquid Glass (not to be confused with the automotive product of the same name). It is a high gloss pour on product and can be painted on and is used as a quick finish for decoupage.

I have used it on the base of a wooden tray. You paint the tray and when it is dry paint it with a coat of Liquid Glass and pour a thin layer of the Liquid Glass to cover the base and allow it to nearly set. Then place the quilling in the tray and when the resin has set pour another, thicker layer over to completly cover the quilling and allow this to set. If you quill in 1.5mm strips you will not need to use as much product to cover the design. If it contracts when the resin has set it may pull away from the sides of the tray and you just need to mix a little more and fill in the gaps.

I have not used this for quite a few years but I think I have given the basics. Wow I am all enthused now and may try this myself again.

Hi Jocelyn and Paula - thanks for your comments! The Liquid Glass you mention sounds really interesting, Jocelyn - I've never heard of it before, but then I've never done decoupage. It sounds as though it would be much easier to use than resin, so I'll definitely look out for it! Thanks for the tip ... and enjoy your coffee, Paula!
