How do you catalogue your ideas for designs?

Post by Jocelyneliza on 2010-08-15, 10:06

We can get inspirations for designs from many different areas, children’s colouring-in books, embroidery patterns, advertisements or photos in articles in magazines and colour combinations are seen all over and I am sure there are many other examples but how do you capture these ideas and where do you store them?

I have a folder on my computer where I document anything I find on the internet and this is seems to be working resonably well.

I always carry a small notebook with me and jot down notes and do rough drawings of something I find interesting but then I do not do anything much else with the information. I also remove the pictures or advertisements from magazines and have them all in a document wallet but feel I should combine and catalogue these pages and my rough notes in some way. So I wondered how others catalogue their ideas. I have thought of using a binder or pasting them all in a book or using an expandable file but have not committed to anything as yet.

Maybe we can put all our suggestion on "Tips and Advice".

I use a 3 ring binder marked quilling ideas and use plastic sleeves to keep the paper with ideas and pictures in.
I also find ideas and pictures on the internet and I save them to my pictures on computer and also save them to disk, that way if I get stumped on what to make next, I can look through the pictures and get ideas that way. Also having them on disk you can print as many as you want for patterns.
Hope this helps

A binder with plastic sleeves works well as you can have it open when you are working with your quilling project.
I too have a sketch pad where i put down any "brainwaves" I have.

I'm not so organized as to save anything I find on the web, but I definitely draw and write out any ideas I have in a journal. Sometimes it's only an idea, but it has multiple themes so I write all of the themes as bullet points - as not to forget my moment of inspiration.

I like the idea of the clear sleeves in a binder though!

I keep coming across ideas that I've stashed away ... trouble is, there never seems to be enough time to do them all (plus I'm in danger of forgetting about them, too!) LOL ... please excuse me for not inserting the smileys, but they don't seem to work on my computer!
