Don't have a crimper?

Post by Heather on 2010-09-02, 18:25

I was reading one very old quilling book and it showed how you can use a hand drill to crimp your strips. You almost need two people to do this but it can be done. I got to thinking that an egg beater would work well too. My guess is that the hand drill would make slightly deeper pleats but I have to search through our old tools in the garage to see if I can find an old fashioned hand drill. I am lucky, I do have a crimper or two in my craft room. I can see where deeper pleats than what a crimper makes might come in handy at times.

I've also heard that there is a children's toy - sort of a block set that you can use to make your own crimper. Since I don't have kids, I don't know the name and would have to explore the stores to find ones with the cogs that when put together can build a crimper.

Hi Quillers: I could not come up with something to take the place of a crimper. So I bot one. Your tips are a bit late for me, but that is sure being inventive, using an egg beater. I don't know about the old drill tool but still a possibility. Keep up the inspirations and tips. Best Wishes Babbs

Finally got around to finding the home made crimper piece at
Inna's creations blog
If you don't have an old printer, many IT shops throw them out if they can't be repaired so you can ask there as they are usually happy to give them to you to save room in their dumpsters
Have fun

Huh, when I crimp, I just use small scissors and it looks fine! But...I am good with working with tiny things! I did that with this tiny flower with regular 3 mm wide strips. I am going to be blind when I'm old (I'm only 17, well in 2 weeks, so I have a long way to go!). My eye doctor thinks I could take my contacts out when quilling...I'm all "not a chance" *she thinks in her head*...

The toy used is LEGO. If you put crimper, Lego in your search engine you'll find directions on how to create a Lego crimper. Hope this helps

Well done Wen! Do show us your ideas for using it.
I think I must get one too having done without one since I began quilling.
Hmm, birthday present idea for family in a couple of months.

I've been working without one all along too, Bronwyn, but I'm wanting to do some natural scenes of birds and am hoping the crimper will help me with the scenery. Don't know yet though... working on a whale right now. An orca. Smile Will go back to the birds soon though.

Wen,
Your scene on your blog is very intriguing and I like the idea of mixed media you have done.
Looking forward to seeing your whale

Thanks Bronwyn! I'm getting there. Now I have to be very patient and make LOTS of little splashes with white and blue shades of paper. Smile
