Paper plaiting

Post by Philippa on 2010-09-27, 17:50

Elizabeth Moad (author of the new Christmas Quilling book we've been talking about) put me on to this excellent tutorial on paper plaiting - a traditional technique that was once used for plaiting straw.

Here's the link:
http://foldingtrees.com/2009/09/guest-feature-paper-plaiting/

As you'll see, Elizabeth has used this method for plaiting with 3mm quilling strips to make wheatsheaf designs (what we in England call 'corn dollies') - and it looks really great!

I thought I'd have a go, and here's my first attempt (a bit fiddly at first, but I guess like all things it takes practice).

I'm sure this technique has huge potential for making some really interesting things. Does anybody else feel inspired?

Lovely work with these earrings! They would take very little time to complete compared to the wheat example. Far less imposing. Thank you for sharing this.

Seems to me that paper plaiting would be great for the body of a butterfly! Depending on the size of the butterfly of course...

You're right, Quillingsavy - there must be all kinds of applications for this. And Heather - yes, the earrings were really quick to make. I think Elizabeth's wheat sheaf creations must have taken an age ...
