When Did You Start Quilling?

Post by A-M on 2010-10-10, 00:11

Hi everyone
I am new to this forum as I only yesterday discovered the store as I was searching for Quilling supplies. Many years ago - possibly around 1990 I started quilling for making greeting cards. Then in 1992 I discovered rubber stamps and combined the two until the stamping took over and I put aside my quilling tools.
Now I have decided I want to get back to some quilling to create flowers for scrapbook pages and also add to cards again. But back in 2005 when we were planning on selling our house I had to do a big tidy and up and ended up throwing out my quilling supplies which of course were very dusty.

Once my tools and paper I have ordered arrives I will make something to share in the gallery.

Waving to you from Canada.

I did a little bit of quilling years ago in Nursing school but I don't count it because I never really got into it. About 7 years ago when a scrapbooking store opened up in my city, I started doing simple things for the store to sell as embellishments on their pages. They saw what I was doing and asked me to make them. My quilling sold very well there but unfortunately the store overall did not do well (their overhead was way too high) and after 3 years they went belly-up. We have no other scrapbooking store in my city so I travel to other places and teach some quilling. I was also teaching it at the store where I sold my quilling.

I've never really done any large projects....just borders and embellishments mostly for scrapbooking and cards.

I am also a rubber stamper and combine the two whenever I can.

I have to find another outlet for my quilling as I love doing it, it doesn't take up a lot of space in my small house, but I am building up quite a bit of stock right now. I've made a number of cards that I have given away to churches for shut-ins, and cards for an animal rescue group to sell. I am no longer nursing and now have time to explore my hobbies.

I started when I was like in 6th grade or something for a bit....my mom's friend thought I would like it, so I just got a kit for quilling of small creatures. I soon got bored of that with a lack to quill, but I think I REALLY got into it when I moved into the current house I now live in... Not including that first blip, perhaps 4 years, but intermitently (I should change the number of years on my profile) I found a quilling book in Klutz, and with so much to quill, I got hooked! Then I looked on the net at quilling, and I became much more advanced, and tried quilling a 3D pot. Then I got the 3D quilled characters book, and tried some things in there, and started to come up with patterns in my head Smile.

Hi Anne Marie
I tried several different crafts but even my stick men looked like something my 3 yr old had done.....sad but true! So I only got frustrated and never took anything up

I went to a card making afternoon at my sisters and within weeks found a small, well they called it a kit. but really it was a few strips of craft paper with double sided taped shaped into butterflies in Kmart. Had no idea what I was suppose to do with it as the instructions were so obscure so I ended up using a crotchet hook but the action was so therapeutic I went looking for more quilling supplies. Bought someone's unwanted quilling collection and away I went. Just loved it.
Before I knew it I had sourced good quality paper & tools overseas that I couldn't find here, started the forum then started teaching for the local council and craft stores and ran out of time for myself rollin pin
I find quilling so calming with such a big family and get loads of enjoyment when others learn this beautiful art/craft

When I was in Primary school, we were taught a bit of quilling. Several years later and I discovered it again. This time, I was more interested in it so I went to a local craft store and bought a book on quilling, plus a quilling tool and some paper strips. I was so hooked and lately I have been expanding my crafting range by buying cards and stamps and glitter to add something extra to the quilling.
Its so addictive I have to tell myself to not quill anything so I can do other things!! Razz
I'm really hoping as time goes on, I'll improve on my skills and be able to create great pieces of artwork Smile

I'm a newbie, but my mom quilled for years and I took a couple of her workshops. I just didn't try it myself because I had no time. Mom passed in 2008 and I decided the following winter to give quilling a try. I never thought I'd have the patience for it, and indeed, I don't yet do the frilly detailed stuff my mom did, but I'm very much enjoying making more whimsical pics with kids in mind. Working on some cards, tags and pics now for a Xmas show in November. So far, so good. Smile

I am working getting ready for a craft market as well.
A-M I began quilling in 1985 in South Australia. What was good about it was to go home from a class with something completed in your hand.

I started quilling last Christmas (11 months ago) while on a cruise of the Sth. Pacific. Loved it immediately. I now sell at our local craft markets.
I intend to quill until I drop.

Welcome Pauline,

Did they teach quilling on the cruise or did you just bring it along to learn. We'd love to see some of your work when you get the chance. I've been quilling for a few years now, but I usually do small things for cards or scrapbooking embellishments.

Heather,

I first saw quilling on board the cruise ship and thought that it was something I would enjoy doing, so I had a go, and I was hooked. I have posted a few of my cards into the quilled card section of the gallery if you would like to see them.
