Flowers and their meanings

Post by Jocelyneliza on 2010-10-14, 11:12

My nephew has married his girlfriend in China and we will be celebrating with an Aussie wedding reception in February and so have been doing research on, among other things, flowers and their meanings and thought you may find this of interest.

In Victorian times a posy of flowers would carry a message.

Due to the strict protocol of the Victorian times emotions, wishes and thoughts were not openly expressed between men and women. Instead, an elaborate language based on flower symbolism was developed with gifts of single flowers or bouquets which conveyed clear messages to the recipients.

I am sure you can see how I would directly link this to quilling. I Googled “Flowers and their meanings” and some wonderful sites came up. I found these two the most informative for my needs.

Flowers 1

Contains meanings, Birthday Flowers, Star signs, traditional colour choice and subconscious/emotional effects of flowers and colours.

Flowers 2

This site has the meanings and also thumbnails of the flowers. Great for someone like me who is not so familiar with recognising flowers so with pictures it means I can try and quill the flower.

There seems to be mixed messages with some of the flowers though:

Petunia – Resentment; anger; your presence soothes me.

Hydrangea – Thank you for understanding; Frigidity; Heartlessness.

In the future I will be giving more thought to the message contained in my designs.

HI Jocelyn
Wow, how interesting I had never considered all these flowers as most of us know what you use for a wedding romance or funeral flower but there is so much more I had no idea
Many thanks for the information, I too will keep these book marked and consider my flowers to the situation!

This is such a great idea! Thanks you so much Jocelyn. Putting meaning behind what you quill really takes it to the next level I think Smile
I'll definitely be using these sites in the future!

Hello Jocelyn,
Did you know Ivy is associated with matrimony and friendship?
I iced a wedding cake for a cousin and she wanted small pink roses done in fondant and then she wanted fresh ivy draped around it as well. I would have preferred the look of fondant ivy, but she wanted fresh.

Wow. Very cool site. My mom put wild violets on my wedding cake because they were in season and we were being married in her back yard, which was purple with fresh violet blossoms. Turns out to be a totally appropriate flower for our life style. Smile Interesting.

I am pleased you are finding these sites interesting. There are other sites with meanings for animals, chinese zodiac, gemstones and many others. I think it is good to know this information is out there for when you want to do something special.

A-M if you click on the highlighted "Flowers 1" and "Flowers 2" in my original text you will be taken straight to the sites.

I recently made a celebratory piece for a 50th anniversary. I just went with my instincts to decorate the photo, but these sites would be very handy to pick something with more meaning .. especially when we're stuck for what to make! Smile

Thanks Jocelyn - I did not realise there was a link with those words. I have bookmarked both sites as they come in handy sometime.
