Help! Wedding Invitations - Heart Shape

Post by Lauren (Administrator) on 2011-04-06, 01:36

I have had an enquiry from someone regarding a quilled design for some wedding invitations.

"My oldest friend is getting married at the end of the year, and I'm helping her with wedding invitations. She has her mind set on a very specific paper quilling design.

I have attached a photo of what she is after (a heart with paper quills all over it) - do you sell anything similar? And if not, are you able to point me in the right direction of where I can source these?
"

They will need approximately 55 quilled heart shapes that they can attach to a paper of their choice. I have advised them that this would be quite a time consuming task!!

I am curious, if you were to do this for someone would you charge them? How much would you charge??

Let me know your thoughts, tips or ideas and I can pass them on.

Would that be 55 invitations? Or 55 quillings per invitation?

They really don't look difficult...just time consuming, as you said! Wink They are pretty!!

I have no idea regarding the charges, so I won't be of any help at all!! Although I'm getting much better at the quilling/twirling part...but I've got to get over my glue addiction...I use way too much of that stuff... Wink

55 invitations!

The heart is about the size of the palm of your hand.

Oh boy...that's a bunch of twirlin'!! I sort of counted the quillings in that heart...about 50-55 give or take!!!

Good Luck...if I were anywhere close to you I would love to help...make it a "quill yourself silly" party!!

Lauren,
I would charge between $4 and $5 per heart, depending how much you could charge a friend I guess. Sometimes friends expect things at a discount.

It is really hard to charge friends as you can not always factor in the time taken to complete the task.

As this is a very good friend getting married and assuming the quiller is to be invited to the wedding a suggestion to get around this is to offer to do the quilling and construct the invitations as a wedding present.

That is a lot of work depends on how much time you have to make them. I had made some wedding invitations last year about 150 of them but the heart was much simpler design here you can see the flower is the colour of the bridesmaid's dresses.

Luckily they have given up on the idea. The general feedback they received was that it was far too time consuming.

Miriam your invitation cards are lovely.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The way around the problem might be to do it photographically. What I mean is: you would quill a single heart, photograph it, pull the image into a digital graphics program such as Photoshop Elements to eliminate the background and then print the invitation cards with the 'extracted' quilled heart image on.

Too bad we live so far from each other. I loved the sample your friend/customer gave you and would gladly have quilled them for her. Red is one of my favourite colours. I could see doing this many an evening watching TV, visiting friends, waiting at doctor's appointments. It really wouldn't take that long to make the coils, when you can do it in spare minutes and put them together later. The flourish part is the part that would have me worried. It doesn't look that sturdy, especially since many of the invites would be mailed. I would be tempted to use a fancy die cut flourish instead with fancier red paper that matched the heart. Or you could always emboss a flourish using a stamp, or hand drawing with a Zig/Versamark pen and then embossing in red.

Love the design and may have a go playing around with it for fun.
