Christine Donehue - Another award winning piece

Post by Lauren (Administrator) on 2011-05-15, 02:36

Good evening,

Some of you may be familiar with the amazing work by Australian Quiller Christine Donehue.

Christine has once again been acknowledged for her stunning quilling work at this year's Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Christine took out first place in two categories:

Class 290: Folded Greeting Card
Details and photos of this piece will follow in the coming months once Christine has finished entering it into some upcoming competitions. But trust me, wait till you see it!!

Class 291: Wall Hanging or Picture Framed
Plate with Knife and Fork

As you can see this is another beautifully detailed display of Christine's quilling.

The plate has a diameter of 28cm and a depth of about 25mm. The base plate is made with about ten packets of white 3mm. The blue design is made with mainly three different shades of blue in mostly 1.5mm, 3mm and some 1.5mm cut in half (now that's small!!). There are two other shades of blue used in small amounts.

The inspiration behind this design was a picture Christine saw of an antique Persian dinner plate. The knife and fork were an afterthought to lighten up the piece and give the plate some context. They were done in white so not to distract too much from the plate. The plate was worked on a dinner plate borrowed from the kitchen. The blue design, glued on top, helps to keep the base firm.

It took Christine over two months and many late nights to complete the piece.

Although Christine found it to be a complex and detailed piece she "enjoyed the challenge of translating a picture into a quilling design and being able to share with other quilling and craft enthusiasts".

Ann Martin from All Things Paper interviewed Christine last year and if you have not read this lovely interview you can read it here: Interview with Christine Donehue.

Christine has one of her award winning pieces Pink Lotus up for sale.

For more information on this piece please see the Quilling Artwork for Sale category on this forum or contact me and I will put you in touch with Christine.

Christine, we enjoy your beautiful quilling pieces and thank you very much for sharing them with us.

I saw both these pieces at the Royal Easter Show and they were stunning. The plate was the largest tight roll I have ever seen, the design was incredibly involved and the different quilling elements matched each other in size and placement. The knife and fork were a wonder on their own.

The folding card was also amazing and I am sure also involved quite a few hours work.

That is just amazing.
I wonder how long it took just to do the bottom part, I would have to have a mighty big quilling coach to do that, or drill a hole in a pizza pan.
Truly a work of art, I really like the knife and fork too.
