Popularity of Quilling in a Queensland School

Post by Lauren (Administrator) on 2011-07-19, 14:07

I have recently received some orders for quilling supplies from a school in Queensland (Boonah State School). I have recently made some enquiries as to why the school was buying quilling supplies and I thought I would share the response with you all.

'Boonah State School is a primary school in the countryside an hour southwest of Brisbane. Here our students have recently been introduced to the art of quilling and are loving it!

As part of an extension program to further develop our students as creative thinkers, our primary school introduced a Club Electives program where students could select from several sports, performing arts and visual arts classes. Much to our surprise the most popular selection was the visual arts, in the form of quilling. Our surprise came, because none of our 100+ Year 5 - 7 students knew about quilling before it was presented to them as one of their options. This keen interest indicates that although students today have access to seemingly exciting technology for their leisure pursuits, children still have a strong need and desire for ‘old-fashioned’ crafts such as quilling.

Due to the unexpected popularity for the quilling option our school staff had to quickly organise more materials (a task eased by the generous cooperation of Creative Quilling), plus we also had to put a ceiling of thirty students on the group’s roll and create a waiting list. Three months on, the popularity for our quilling class is still there and the enthusiasm of our quilling students has increased significantly as they experience the shared joys of being creative through quilling.'

It is so lovely to hear that the relatively unknown craft (to the wider population) of quilling has become so popular to a group of 11-13 year olds.

I am going to try and get some pictures of what the children are doing so I can share them with you.

I would also love to hear any more stories you might have of children quilling or please post some photos in the gallery. I will set up a new category in the gallery for children.

I hope you are all having a lovely day. It is cold and wet here in Sydney this evening.

That is really great news, about the school wishing to learn more about Quilling. I only wish I could get more ladies interested in continuing with Quilling, for after a few lessons they are onto something else. So next April or May I will doing an exhibition mainly on Quilling, this might bring some interests. I find most people like to have things finished already yesterday, I will keep trying.

Lauren,
Thanks for sharing. That is great there is such a demand in the school for this type of creativity.
I once did some quilling with my DD's class when she was at primary school, but it was not an ongoing thing.
