Got any great ideas for something different?

Post by admin on 2010-01-08, 13:37

Just wondering if you have got any ideas for a new project. Sometimes we feel the need to break away from the quilled cards and frames and just do something different or unique and all it takes is some suggestions.

Here is some things I was thinking and if you can add to the list or have a photo of what you have done, please share

1. glass coffee table - quill under the glass
2. bathroom mirror
3. your computer monitor
4. Toilet seat - you know those ones you see that are clear with the spiders or shells in them, why not quilling? I know what I would rather be sitting on:lol!: and it's not the redback!
5. A clock - get a plain one from the shop, and quill the face
6. lamp shade
7. A pencil or pen top - if you attach it with a small spring you can get out of an old pen or the like then pop a butterfly or bug on the top so it wobbles when you write.
8. An old CD or DVD is very effective for a floral arrangement
9. An oriental fan
10. quilled coasters

Okay now it's your turn but remember hubby's shaving brush and the mother inlaws steering wheel don't count!

Hi Bronwyn,
Thanks for your input, wow, a candle. I never would have thought. Is there any specific type of candle that you quill? I would love to hear all about it. How do you afix the coils? Do you think you could pop a picture in the gallery for us all to see? I was also thinking what about a hat. You could take a really plain rafia hat and make something really unique. Has anyone done that for say the races or something special?
What about brooches? Now I did see someone who makes them and coats them in some sort of hardener. I will see if I can find it later
regards

Hi Karon,
There are several different ways to decorate candles. I do not have many photos that I can show you.
Long thin candles look lovely with florist wire coiled around them and then the quilling such as a small flower is glued to the florist wire at spaced out intervals. This idea comes form a USA magazine from 1980's. This would be a nice idea for Valentine's, wedding anniversary or Christmas( with holly).
You can do a similar idea fro a thick short candle by doing a circle of florist wire around the base.
Some people use pins stuck through the quilling design and then stuck into the wax. This means the quilling can be removed easily when the candle burns down to where the quilling is.
You can also use double sided tape to make the quilling design stick to the wax.

Bouquet of flowers

Post by psychedaboutquilling on 2010-01-12, 11:27

Hi,

Just got a cool idea. I was going to make a bouquet of quilled flowers. I went to Sam's Warehouse today for a few odds and ends and got the idea of getting green florists foam and wire and making a 3D bouquet by attaching the flowers to the wire and sticking them into the foam.

The foam isn't very attractive so I was thinking of maybe placing it into a small vase or basket.

I am going to attempt it this week. Will post a picture once I have completed it.

Also meant to mention a bridal horse shoe for luck, or any bridal memento that the bride can carry.
My first horse shoe I did to enter in the Lilydale Show and I won first prize for it in the late 1990's. A Show steward bought it from me when I when to collect my entries at the end of the show. So I never got a photo of it.

Sounds like you will have to make another one for us! I would love to see some hair clips quilled. I think that for a little girl say a butterfly or the like would be a real hit. I would say just like the jewelery quilling you would need to spray it with lacquer. Have you used lacquer Bronwyn? I wonder how well it gels with the paper!

Yes I have a can of Gloss Spray by Boyle. Prior to that i have used a USA brand that lasted me years. I use it on my Christmas ornaments.
It does not damage the paper

I bought some wooden door knob hangers from Crazy Clarks for 95 cents....I'm like you Karon and have a fear of painting, it always ends up streaked but I'm going to tackle the door knob hangers on the weekend

I was just thinking too, what about a welcome sign for your front door. You would have to hang it in a weather free area (undercover) but it would really make a statement before people enter the house!

Also a key rack with a quilled feature
a quilled memo board
quilled watches
key ring (quilling inside the clear plastic section)
paper weights
