Casket eggs

Post by Kat on 2012-03-26, 00:52

I'm practising making quilled eggs and have now got the hang of covering polystyrene eggs, so would now like to move on to making ones in two halves that you can open and close.

I don't know how to do this though - does anyone know how to make them? How do you make the hinge to open and close them with?

I think I have an idea how to make a hinge for your egg Smile

You need a toothpick and now...
You need 2x2 rolled strips... 2 in the middle will be linked to the one half and 2 on the end's of toothpick will be linked to the second half..

I think that its is quite good ;p.

Hello Busia, thanks for trying to help - I'm not quite sure I know what you mean, but I'll think about how to do this.

That's brilliant! Aww what a darling you are to do this - bless you, thank you so much.

So, the toothpick stays inside the 4 paper coils? I'm not quite sure because you say 'glued with toothpick' on the outside paper coils, but then you say 'not with a toothpick' on the middle two coils. That's the bit that confuses me.

Ah, are you saying, glue the two end coils to the toothpick that's inside the four coils, but not the middle two?

You'll have to make a casket egg now and try out your hinge design to see if it works - Smile

Toothpick stays in 4 coils but it is glued only to two on the ends... The coils in the middle are loose, glued only with themselves Smile

coils at the ends you can push little outside co they will be a little bit rounded at one side so the toothpick wont be visible

Now I'm making a monochromatic egg Smile like my blue one Smile

It's working: ) Twisted Evil
I made a hinge Very Happy For egg You must wait a little bit ;p

Kasia I'm having a hard time gluing the toothpick to the two end coils. it just won't stick because of the hole in the middle of the coils. I put the glue on the toothpick, but there's nothing for it to adhere to - any suggestions?

I've done it! I glued the end of the paper to the wood and then coiled it around.

Okay, hinge done, just the egg to do now, in two halves.

I've wrapped each half in food wrap, do I now just add the quill shapes straight onto it - making sure of course that each shape is glued to the one beside, above or below it.

Do I need to put a ring of thin card around the inside edge - where each half will meet -of each egg to reinforce it or to give the quill shapes something to stick to?

just make sure that a little bit of glue will be on the foil with the quilled element Wink. Wet glue will hold it at the right place Smile. I can make a photo's of mine egg in making phase if you want Smile

This is a whole egg, not in two halves?

I've now almost finished my two halves, just need to see if the hinge will fit and work - keep your fingers crossed for me!

This picture is not clear? Hinge have three segments, these on the sides of toothpick are glued with it (and the egg half) and the middle one is loose, glued only with other egg half. hope this will help Smile
